Delusion (3) depicts an abandoned historical building, a school. Through the painting treatment given to the subject matter, which is set against a forest as its backdrop, I try to convey the feelings that arise from seeing the ruin and decay brought on by the hands of time.

The title of this work is ‘Delusion Prophecy of Modern Day Paredolia’. It was produced from a combination of medium 90 degree inverted burn, direct petrol burn and pyrographic printing (using metal blocks). Originally made in 2016 as a prototype fully from heat/ fire based on the principles of thermodynamics, that is, through the exchange of energy where heat is the main medium in image production and transfer in print art. This work, measuring 182x244cm, was inspired by an article from the 20th century sociologist, Robert K. Merton where he states that “Self-Fulfilling Prophecy”, ‘is the beginning, a false definition of the situation evoking a new behaviour which makes the original false conception come true’. Elsewhere he further explains that it “is a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become true, but the very terms of the prophecy itself, due to positive feedback between belief and behaviour”.

Looking at our way of life today, from the way we dress to the food we consume, it is hard to distinguish the real roots of our culture. The same thing is happening in the local art-making world today where young artists tend to refer to artists from western countries. I myself too am no exception. In this age of information technology, the internet has made the world succumb to the dominating cultures of the US, focusing only on the grandeur and the lifestyles of its people. This artwork describes the very conflict that our generation faces today. A pile of western-origin dishes as depicted in the middle of the painting highlights our obsession with western luxury. The barren land in the background symbolises the false idea we have on the overall wonders of the west, like staged scenes from movies or plays, while the phrase ‘hidangan dari kayangan’ (meal from heaven) simply means that most of the time we just meekly accept everything that’s being served to us without question or hesitation, like the Malay proverb ‘Umpama Lalang ditiup Angin’ (Like weeds blown by the Wind).

This abstract work was produced by utilising my new method to art making, painting with a palette knife with my right hand while being naturally left-handed. This approach came about recently after completing my ‘Tugu’ Series and it is a tribute to my favourite band Pearl Jam. The band and its lead singer Eddie Vedder has the biggest influence on me as a visual artist and a musician. The songs ‘Alive’, ‘Even Flow’ and ‘Garden’ were written based on issues surrounding conflicts of identity, homelessness and the needs of modern society pertaining to the environment and our behaviour as human beings. I consider my work as a meditation on nature with the forms, structures and the images of hills being utilised for modernsation in the painting are meant to act as reminders to the viewers of what we have done and what we are to become.
